Biography
I have been an advocate, a provider of services and supports, worked for the state government and over the last 5 years worked at Anthem implementing the CCC+ Care Coordinator program as a Manager for the LTSS team. My passion is to help ensure that a community life is available for all people especially for those with a diagnosis of Brain Injury and Intellectual and/or Developmental disabilities. As a registered nurse I saw an opportunity to dispel the myth that the only safe places for people with complex medical needs and I/DD was in institutional settings and worked along so many wonderful partners in Virginia to establish nursing as part of community support teams in roles that are supportive, educational and support the persons own autonomy, desires and dreams. I met Michael at a training in Charlottesville (when we were both much younger) and it totally changed my way of thinking. Since then it has been my passion to really learn to listen to what people want, need and then to understand how all parts of the support system worked so that we could have supports and services both paid and unpaid that could support people to have a life they wanted in the communities they choose with the ones they love. I truly enjoy teaching and sharing pieces of my journey of learning with the participants. I am a graduate of the National Leadership program at the University of Delaware under Steve Eidelman, I sat on the Housing Board of Prince William County for over 10 years and on the Disability Services Board. I have a Bachelors of Science Degree in Nursing from George Mason University. I am licensed as a Registered Nurse in Virginia and the surrounding states. I have been married to my wonderful husband for 40 years, am a mother of three and a grandmother of 4. I live the support life of a parent with an amazing daughter with developmental disabilities and behavioral health diagnosis.
