Biography

My name is Brenda A. Brown-Dutchover. Currently, I’m currently employed at Health and Human Service Commission (HHSC) as an Enhanced Community Coordinator Training Specialist in the IDD-BHS training unit. I train HHSC employees, LIDDAs, and other stockholders on a variety of topics to assist diverting or transitioning a person from institutional type facility (e.g., State Hospitals, State Supported Living Centers, and Nursing Facilities).

I have worked with the IDD population since 1991, this was before my first daughter was born. I began my journey working with a local ICF/IID facility and after two years, transitioned to a local LIDDA. There I held several positions within the agency. While working with the LIDDA, I began working on becoming a certified PCT trainer and achieved this goal in 2018. This was very a big accomplishment for me. With the knowledge I have and the addition of person-centered thinking skills, I was able to better support people with IDD by discovering what was important to them and how they wanted to be supported and by to assisting people with diverting and transitioning to alternative community living options they desired where the person could grow and become the person they wanted to be, rather than who someone else wanted them to be. Performing the ECC function was a very rewarding and satisfying job to me.

Since transitioning to my current job with HHSC, I have more opportunities to share my wealth of knowledge with others who support people with IDD and that makes me happy. There are other things that make me happy when I’m not working. I enjoy gardening, working with my houseplants, arts & crafts, and spending time with my family and friends at the beach. I must not forget about taking road trips with my family and my love for spotting windmills along the way.

My overall goal is to continue to grow professionally and to share my wealth of knowledge with others so that people being supported can have better lives. I have always said, it’s not about the amount of money a person makes, because we all know that makes people happy, but it is more about the gratification and rewards in doing something that you really enjoy, while helping to enrich others’ lives, that makes you happy.
