Biography

My name is Kenya Martinez, and I am a Program Manager at a non-profit in the Bay area, coordinating an Inter-Agency Council to assist in eliminating barriers for families and their child & youth with special health care needs. My career and voluntary activities in the community have always been in the service of our most vulnerable populations. I was appointed to the Self-Determination Advisory Committee (SDAC) Alta California Regional Center in Sacramento. In this role, I represent families and have a special interest in assisting young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, as a sibling and a parent. I finished the trainer-the-trainer model of Person Centered Thinking in late 2022 and continue to use the tools that I developed to assist families in their comprehension of encouraging their school-aged and young adult children to have a self-determined life.

Earlier in my career, I was employed by the Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund (DREDF) in Berkeley, to provide
technical information as it pertains to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). She reviewed documentation related to special education services, including school records, 504 plans, and private assessments and evaluations. Informed parents/guardians of their educational rights and responsibilities and what options are available to them, in addition to interacts with educational and healthcare professionals on a weekly basis.

Until recently, Mrs. Martinez served in education reform by guiding and resurrecting the Community Advisory Committee through
turbulent times with my outstanding leadership. The Community Advisory Committee (CAC) acts in an advisory capacity to the Special
Education Local Plan Area (SELPA), supports individuals with exceptional needs ages 0-22 years and their families who are served
by the Sacramento Unified School District.

I am the proud parent of two teens with disabilities and have an adult sibling with a disability.
